🏏 Pat Cummins Ruled Out of T20 World Cup 2026; Australia Make Two Changes to Squad

COLOMBO / SYDNEY, 31 January 2026 — Australia’s bid to defend their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup crown has taken a significant hit as premier fast bowler Pat Cummins has been ruled out of the tournament due to a persistent back injury. The national selectors have confirmed two key changes to the final 15-player squad ahead of the marquee event beginning in India and Sri Lanka on 7 February, 2026.

In a major blow for the Aussies, Cummins — who has played limited cricket since mid-December and was hoped to return later in the tournament — will miss out completely as he continues his recovery.

To fill the void, left-arm pacer Ben Dwarshuis has been added to the squad, bringing valuable swing bowling options along with his athletic fielding and late-order hitting capabilities.

Additionally, Matt Renshaw — a left-handed batter with recent white-ball form — has replaced Matthew Short, providing Australia with extra depth in the middle order, especially with spin-friendly conditions expected in Sri Lanka.

Despite calls from fans and pundits, veteran batter Steve Smith — fresh off an impressive Big Bash League campaign — was not included in the final squad, highlighting selectors’ emphasis on balance and role flexibility.

The team, led by captain Mitchell Marsh, is currently sharpening up in a three-match T20I series in Pakistan as part of its World Cup preparation ahead of a Group B opener against Ireland in Colombo on 11 February.
