Chloe Kim Dominates Halfpipe Qualifying at 2026 Winter Olympics, Eyes Unprecedented Third Consecutive Gold

LIVIGNO, Italy — American snowboarding superstar Chloe Kim delivered a commanding performance in the women’s snowboard halfpipe qualification at the 2026 Milano-Cortina Winter Olympic Games on February 11, advancing to the finals with the highest score of the day as she chases an unprecedented third straight Olympic gold medal.

Despite battling a serious shoulder injury in the lead-up to the Games — including a torn labrum sustained during January training in Switzerland — the 25-year-old proved in top form, posting a score of 90.25, the only mark above 90 among the field.

“I’m just really happy with how I’m competing and being able to ride with confidence,” Kim said after qualifying, acknowledging both her physical challenges and her determination to compete at her best.

A Storied Career and Historic Goal

Chloe Kim entered the 2026 Games already cemented as one of snowboarding’s all-time greats. She first captured global attention with gold medals in the women’s halfpipe at PyeongChang 2018 and Beijing 2022, becoming the youngest woman ever to land back-to-back Olympic halfpipe titles.

If she triumphs again in Italy, Kim would make history as the first snowboarder — male or female — to win three consecutive Olympic gold medals in the same event.

Qualification Day Highlights

The qualification round at Livigno Snow Park featured 29 riders representing nations across four continents. Kim’s opening run showcased high-amplitude air, spinning maneuvers and technical precision, outpacing close competitors like Japan’s Sara Shimizu, who scored 87.50.

Behind Kim, fellow Americans Maddie Mastro and Bea Kim also secured places in the finals, along with international standouts such as Spain’s Queralt Castellet Ibanez and Japan’s Sena Tomita.

Drama and Safety Concerns

Sunday’s qualifiers were also marked by a frightening crash involving Chinese snowboarder Liu Jiayu, a veteran of multiple Olympics. Liu fell heavily in her second run and was taken off the course by medical staff — underscoring the sport’s risk even at elite levels.

Road to the Medal Final

Finals in the women’s snowboard halfpipe are scheduled for Thursday, February 12, where the top 12 qualifiers will compete for podium positions. Fans and competitors alike will be watching closely as Kim steps up — not just for gold, but for Olympic history.
