Apple Unveils Budget MacBook Neo in Major Strategy Shift

A new entry-level Mac aims to bring Apple’s ecosystem to students and everyday users at a lower price

In a move that might redefine Apple’s line of laptops, Apple has now officially launched its latest laptop, dubbed the MacBook Neo, aimed at making the Apple Mac experience more accessible to a wider range of consumers. The company has now officially launched its latest laptop, dubbed the MacBook Neo, aimed at making the Apple Mac experience more accessible to a wider range of consumers. The company made the announcement during a special event held in early March 2026.
While the MacBook Neo is priced at $599, it is significantly lower than Apple’s existing range of laptops, including the MacBook Air, which is priced above $1,000. The company has now equipped the MacBook Neo with a 256GB storage capacity, making it a practical solution for students and first-time buyers, and consumers who might have found Apple’s existing range of laptops too expensive.
While Apple has now equipped its latest MacBook Neo with a lower price tag, the company has still been able to pack its latest laptop with some of its hallmark features, including a 13-inch Liquid Retina display, aluminum design, and recycled materials, and a battery that lasts up to 16 hours.

Under the hood, the laptop is powered by an A18 Pro chip, a processor designed for use in an iPhone. However, the chip is a powerful one, boasting a 6-core CPU, a 5-core GPU, and a 16-core Neural Engine.
What is particularly intriguing about the MacBook Neo is that when Apple first announced its existence, it was not in an official capacity. Rather, a regulatory document was accidentally placed on Apple’s website earlier in the week that referenced a device called “MacBook Neo.” While the document was quickly removed from Apple’s website, screenshots of the document had already been circulated across tech media outlets.
Analysts believe that the MacBook Neo is a device that is a part of a larger strategy for Apple to compete with lower-cost Windows-based laptops. However, with its design and lower price point, the MacBook Neo may be Apple’s most ambitious move yet in redefining what an entry-level Mac can mean.
The MacBook Neo could mean millions of new users for Apple’s ecosystem—one laptop at a time.
